A walk around Oxford's famous Square will introduce you to a wonderful selection of shops. We have shoe stores, men's and women's fashions, furniture and decor for your house, condo or dorm, and three bookstores for the literary addict and young child. There are stores that feature jewelry, fine cards and invitations, fine art, college wear and more. The South's oldest department store is also located on The Square: Neilson's has been around since 1839 and offers a wide range of clothing, housewares, cosmetics and shoes for the whole family.
Leave The Square and you'll find numerous Markets, Antique stores, Boutiques, Department stores and the Galleria shopping center surrounded by and including some nationwide chain stores. Building is currently in progress to expand the Galleria and add some exciting new places to shop. A few "big-box" stores dot the landscape but mostly, Oxford is a town of unique boutiques and shops.
There are three grocery stores: Wal-Mart on the west side and both Kroger and Larson's Cash Saver to the east. Kroger is getting ready to remodel and there are always rumors about new stores coming to town. Shopping for food on game weekends and the university move-in weekend in August (and again in January) requires skill and planning. The influx of thousands of people for these busy weekends means the grocery shelves get cleared quickly and restaurants are packed. Make reservations at restaurants well in advance. Consider hiring a concierge to shop for you before you get to town for the weekend. Residents simply need to shop early and stock up.
